Americans believe that nobody is beyond the law. Catalan separatists believe that they can ignore the law when they want to.
There is no discussion. “Why should I buckle up my belt? Because it’s the law.” Period.
Even at small things like driving, Americans believe that respecting the law is a key pillar of democracy. The European tradition believes the same. And the best Catalan thinkers, like Jaime Balmes and Francesc Eiximenis, also taught that law-abidance is a virtue that no government or citizen can break without dangerous consequences in the social order.
Mr Mas, Mrs Forcadell and other separatist intellectuals want to organize a referendum against the law. Democrats and law-abiding Catalan citizens don’t understand it. Nor do the Americans.
Sweet and buckled up Catalonia…
